A Beautiful beach house with spectacular sea views on Cape town's Cape Peninsula

At Dunearn, you'll be staying in one of the original houses for which the now famous Boulder's Beach at Simons Town was once a private paradise. These are the views from your bed and breakfast table. Watch the penguins jumping off the rocks in serried ranks as they set out for the open sea, swim with them in the early morning. Listen to the eerie boom of the southern right whales spouting water beyond the boulders in the deep of the night; see them from the terrace as you sip your morning tea.

Dunearn is one of South Africa’s heritage monuments. Built at the turn of the twentieth century, this elegant panelled beach house nestles beneath the Simonsberg with the whole of False Bay and the Hottentots Holland Mountains spread out before it. Step out of the garden gate and you’ll be on the path down to Boulders Beach. This sandy cove with its monumental boulders is one of the most beautiful beaches in the Cape and one of the few protected from the notorious South Easter wind and the great white sharks.

The house is so close to the beach that the boulders have created its gorgeous gardens. They are wooded at the back, underplanted with fynbos, the indigenous flora for which South Africa is famous. Where the land falls away towards the sea, a lavender hedge lines the path and a newly planted aloe garden gleams amongst the rocks. There is a hideaway with views out to sea. Up in the woods, there is a wendy house for kids.

Dunearn is a nature-lover's dream. The garden is home to South Africa's brilliantly coloured sunbirds, long-tailed sugar birds, guinea fowl, hoopoes, dassies (rock hyrax) and, (in a blue moon), a family of baboons. Walk up the mountain behind the house to join the Cape's spectacular hiking trails. Cycle out of the front gate and you'll be on South Africa's famous Argus Race cycling route. Sea-kayaking is there for the taking, And the bright lights of Cape Town - its bars and nightclubs, theatres and concert halls - are a spectacular coastal drive up the road.
